Quiz Attempts and Logs in Brightspace

Purpose: This article details how to review the quiz attempt log. Quizzes in Brightspace have detailed logs that begin when a student enters the quiz. Instructors can review the quiz log for an individual attempt, or export quiz logs for the entire quiz to a CSV (Spreadsheet) file.

Review logs for a single attempt

  1. Access your course in Brightspace and go to Assessments => Quizzes to see the list of quizzes.
  2. Find the quiz where you want to review the logs.
  3. Click the drop-down arrow next to the quiz title, and go to Grade.

In the quiz grading area, you can view by student or attempts. Sorting and filtering in the quiz grading area, including accessing attempts stuck "In Progress" is covered more extensively in our article Quiz Grading Area.

  1. Click on the attempt you wish to review.
  1. Click on the link for "Quizzes Event Log". In a pop up window you'll see the a chronological log, starting with Quiz Entry.

     
  2. Optionally you can enable the "show IP address" option.

Review logs for all attempts

From the quiz grading area, you can also see logs for all attempts.

 

Attempt Logs

The Attempts Logs button will show an activity log for all users that have taken the quiz, sorted by date. In the overview tab, you can filter by the events of: Quiz Entry, Quiz Completion, Quiz Attempt Deleted, Quiz Attempt Restored

In the Detailed tab, you'll see additional events like Response Saved, along with the IP address.

Export Event Logs

In many cases the Attempt Logs screen above can become cluttered if many users are shown. Using the Export Event Logs, takes all the attempt logs, and exports it as a .CSV (Spreadsheet) file that can be sorted in filtered in Excel. You will see the same data as the "detailed" attempt log, such as quiz responses saved, moving to new pages, along with timestamps and IP addresses.
