Overview of the Quiz Grading Area
The quiz grading area can be accessed for any quiz by:
- Going to Assessments => Quizzes,
- Finding your quiz,
- Clicking the dropdown arrow,
- Choosing Grade

On each respective tab of the quiz grading area, you can grade and filter quizzes by users, attempts, or questions. The default tab is the Users tab.
The Users Tab
The Users tab is the default tab of the quiz grading area. By default, only users that have completed a quiz attempt are shown. Additional search and filtering options can be toggled by clicking Show (or Hide) Search options.
Restrict To:
The Restrict To drop down menu can be used to change the students listed on the Users tab. By default, only users that have completed a quiz attempt are shown.

Other useful options are:
Users with attempts in progress — this option will show any student with a attempt currently in progress. Sometimes Start/End dates on a quiz can cause an attempt to get stuck in this state and the student is unable to submit. From this page the instructor can enter the quiz as a student and submit on their behalf.
Users who have not taken an attempt — this option will show only users who do not have a completed quiz attempt (including in-progress users). This is useful for seeing what students still need to complete an attempt.
Please note: All Users, including instructors and various service users that are not listed in the classlist will be shown. You can safely ignore these users.
Users with previewed attempts — This option will show any users, typically instructors, that previewed the quiz and chose to have the results available in the quiz grading area. A previewed attempt can be useful to review quiz scoring options.
All users — this option will show all users, including all students, instructors and service users.
To search, select from the options above and click the magnifying glass icon in the search field.
To clear any search options and return to seeing only users with completed attempts, click the "Clear Search" option.
Publish and Retract Feedback
From the users tab and the attempts tab, you can publish or retract feedback (including grades) by selecting users or attempts with the checkbox, and clicking Publish or Retract.
Reset a Quiz Attempt
You can also reset (delete) a quiz attempt. Reset an attempt when you want to delete the attempt and have the student start over.
Note: This operation will permanently delete all data associated with these attempts of the quiz.
The Attempts Tab
The attempts tab is very similar to the users tab, except all attempts are listed at a single level and not grouped by user. There are also other options to search and filter attempts, including by score and date.
The Questions Tab
The questions tab allows an instructor to grade by question. All questions in the quiz are listed in the order they appear in the quiz edit screen. To grade by question, click a question. By default one student's response is shown at a time, but you can view up to 20 students by changing the dropdown option at the top of the page.
Grading by question can be useful when grading written response questions or if manual grading is needed of any other question type.
Please note: if you have made edits to a question since students have taken the quiz, your original question and the student responses associated with it will be listed at the bottom, under a section called Questions that are not in the quiz anymore.
The "Update all attempts" option can be used to make bulk grading corrections to certain question types (MC, T/F, etc.) This will be covered in more detail in another article.
