Respondus Lockdown Browser and Monitor

What is Respondus Lockdown Browser?

Respondus Lockdown Browser is a app that locks students into the quiz environment during a quiz. Students can't access other software during a quiz with LockDown Browser. Instructors can also choose to apply Respondus Monitor which records students taking quizzes via webcam.

What computer do I need for Lockdown Browser?

Respondus Lockdown Browser works with:
  • Windows PCs ✔
  • Apple Macs ✔

  • Chromebooks* ✔

  • iPads* ✔

iPads and Chromebooks have some limitations with Lockdown Browser. 

Lockdown Browser does NOT work with:
  • Windows 10 or 11 S-Mode or "SE"
  • Android tablets
  • iOS (iPhone) or Android Phones

Where can I get Lockdown Browser?

For Windows and Mac computer, you can download LockDown Browser from our unique CommonwealthU link: http://www.respondus.com/lockdown/download.php?id=666246493

You will also be prompted to download Lockdown Browser if you attempt to take a quiz that requires it. You cannot use a Lockdown Browser from another school, you must use the CommonwealthU Lockdown Browser

iPad users can find Respondus Lockdown Browser in the App Store. 

Chromebook users will get a link to download Lockdown Browser if they attempt to take a Lockdown Browser quiz. 

 

What is Respondus Monitor? What do I need?

Respondus Monitor is built into Lockdown Browser and provides automated proctoring for out-of-class exams. You will need a webcam and microphone for Monitor-enabled exams.

 

I'm having issues with my Chromebook and Lockdown Browser

What if I have an iPad?

Please let your instructor know you'll be using an iPad to take quizzes and exams. Most instructors are happy to enable iPads for Lockdown Browser, but it requires an extra step. Please let them know prior to the quiz or exam. 

 

How can I test Lockdown Browser before a quiz?

We highly encourage students to test their Lockdown Browser for a quiz or exam. Many instructors will provide a "sample" Lockdown Browser test. We also have a stand-alone Lockdown Browser testing course. To test Lockdown Browser or Respondus Monitor:

  1. Log into CommonwealthU Brightspace
  2. On the main homepage, from the Tools menu, click Discover
  3. Browse or Search for "LockDown Browser and Monitor Testing" course. 
  4. Choose the blue Enroll button. If you are already enrolled, this is Open Course
    • You can return to the Lockdown Browser testing course later, under the Course Selector (waffle grid) icon, at the top of the screen.
  5. In the testing course, go to Assessments > Quizzes in the course navigation.
  6. You can choose the take a standard Lockdown Browser-enabled quiz or a Respondus Monitor (webcam) enabled quiz. These are labeled as "Quiz 1" and "Quiz 2". You can take either quiz an unlimited number of times, and they are always available for testing. 

NOTE:
Taking the Lockdown Browser sample quizzes does NOT affect any grade in any course, and it is entirely automated.
Quiz 1 + Zoom" is reserved for testing live with CATS Support. 

 

Does Lockdown Browser affect my device when I'm not taking a quiz?

No. When you are not taking a quiz, Lockdown Browser is not running at all.
