Body
Purpose: By default, students only get a summary score and do not see a question breakdown for Brightspace quizzes. Students also do not see per-question feedback (or points), unless the instructor modifies the default view -- even if per-question feedback has been added.
A video overview of Quiz Results Display is available here:
In this article:
Changing the Standard Feedback View
Note: In previous versions of Brightspace, this might also be referred to as the "Submission View" or sometimes "Quiz Results Display". These terms are used interchangeably.
To change the default for your quiz you can Edit the quiz.
- Access the quiz list by going to Assessments => Quizzes
- Find your quiz, choose the drop down arrow and go to Edit
- In the quiz edit screen, expand the bottom panel on the right "Evaluation & Feedback"
- You'll see the section "When published, display to learners:" with Attempt grade checked and a drop down menu, which by default is set to "No Questions".
- Choose the drop down menu and select an option.

Things to note:
- We recommend that you leave "Attempt grade" checked.
- If you provided per-question feedback to questions that were marked correct, you must show All Questions or students will not be able to read your feedback.
- Options "with correct answers" display the correct answer, according to the grading key. Potential security concerns with this are discussed below.
- Options "without correct answers" only display the question, the point value awarded, and any per-question feedback.
Once you've made a selection, choose "Save or "Save and Close" at the bottom to save the quiz edits. Your changes will take effect immediately.
To revert a quiz to "No Questions" (for example, after a review window) simply follow the instructions above, and choose "No Questions" and Save. Students will no longer have access to the questions.
Creating a Review Window
A common task for instructors is to create an availability window for review. You can do this with the advanced settings available under "Customize Quiz Results Displays"
Scenario 1: Students can see what they got wrong directly after submitting the quiz.
This is a common scenario were you might want students to be able to see what they got wrong directly after submitting a quiz, while students are still in a secure in-person proctored environment. In this scenario, students receive X number of minutes to review questions, before the quiz submission view reverts to a "No Questions" state.
From the Evaluation & Feedback panel in the Quiz edit screen:
- Click the link for Customize Quiz Results Displays
- In the modal window that appears, choose "+ Additional View"

- You see a new entry created, starting with "Additional view comes into effect:"
- Under display date, choose the earliest possible date and time that a student could submit. For simplicity, you can make this the start time of your quiz.
- Check the box for "A limited amount of time (in minutes) after submission" -- type in a number of minutes students will have access to this view after quiz submission.
Please note: this is calculated separately for each student, based on their individual submission time.

- Choose "Display attempt grade for evaluated questions" -- this allows students to see the points earned.

- Under the Questions drop down menu, choose an option, typically "All Questions"
- In the options that appear, "Show the learner’s responses to the displayed questions" should be checked this will show the students what they chose.
- Optionally, you can choose "Show the correct answers to the displayed questions" -- this will show the students the correct answer, from the quiz grading key.

- Once all desired options have been selected, click the Create button. You will see the view you created summarized. Click OK.

Your view will also be summarized on the main quiz edit page, under the Evaluation & Feedback panel.

Scenario 2: Students can see what they got wrong during a future review window.
In this scenario, you might have students taking the same quiz at different times or asynchronously, or you might want to manually score questions. Here we'll review how to use Submission Views to create an availability window that automatically opens and closes.
We will create a pair of submission views to "bookend" the review period.
- Access the Customize Quiz Results Displays modal window.
- Use the + Additional View button to create a "Start" view. (This is time when you want your review window to open)
- Set a date and time when you want the review window to start. (Do not select the "limited amount of time" option here).
- Scroll down and set your options for questions (i.e. "All questions" with "correct answers")
- Click Create.
To create the closing portion of your review period:
- Use the + Additional View button again to create a "End" view. (This is time when you want your review window to close)
- Set a date and time when you want the review window to end. (Do not select the "limited amount of time" option here).
- Select "Display attempt grade for evaluated questions" -- this shows students their grade.
- Scroll down and confirm you question option is set to "Don't Show" -- this is the default.
- Click Create. Then click OK to return to the quiz edit screen.
Your availability window has been created as shown here:

Above: In this example, we have a review window opening at 11:00am and closing at 1:00pm the same day automatically.
Security Concerns
In this section we will review several security related concerns about making questions and answers available using Submission Views.
There may be security concerns about students having access to questions and answers after a test has been completed. While Brightspace has many options for security when taking a quiz, there are fewer options available for quiz review. The IP Restrictions, password, and quiz availability dates (Start Date / End Date) have no affect on whether students can access a the submission view.
Please note: Students that don't take a quiz will never have access to the Submission View for that quiz, as it is based on the individual students submission.
Lockdown Browser
For exams that required the use of Lockdown Browser, the standard setting (automatically checked within Lockdown Browser dashboard is to require Lockdown Browser to review the exam as well).

Please note: Exam that were proctored with Respondus Monitor do NOT use webcam recording when students review, only the standard Lockdown Browser without recording is used.
Special Access
Special Access can be used to allow access to submission views on a per-student basis. When Special Access is set to ONLY allow students with Special Access to access a quiz, the quiz (and submission view) is hidden from anyone not specified in Special Access.
For example, a student comes to office hours to review their exam. The instructor could:
- Set Special Access to ONLY allow users with Special Access.
- Add the student to Special Access (No settings need to be specified)
- Change the Result Display settings in the quiz edit screen, under Evaluation & Feedback
- The student reviews the exam on their own computer while being supervised
- At the end of the session, the instructor removes the student from special access, and reverts the other settings modified.
This method does work, but can be cumbersome when dealing with many students or a large review session.
