How to enable Lockdown Browser and Respondus Monitor for an Exam

LockDown Browser prevents students from printing, copying, going to other URLs, or accessing other applications during an exam. Respondus Monitor adds webcam-based proctoring for additional security.


Step 1: Access the LockDown Browser Dashboard

  1. Log in to Brightspace and go to your course.
  2. In the top menu, click Assessments => Quizzes.
  3. From the Quizzes page, click the LockDown Browser tab (from the tabs above the quiz list) to access the Lockdown Browser Dashboard

Step 2: Locate Your Exam

  1. In the LockDown Browser dashboard, you’ll see a list of all quizzes in your course.
  2. Find the quiz you want to secure (for example, your Final Exam).

Step 3: Require LockDown Browser

  1. Click the dropdown arrow next to the quiz name.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Under LockDown Browser Settings, choose:
    • Require LockDown Browser for this exam.

Step 4: Enable Respondus Monitor

  1. After enabling LockDown Browser, check the box for:
    • Require Respondus Monitor for this exam.
  2. Review the Startup Sequence options (e.g., webcam check, environment check).
    • You can customize these steps or leave defaults.
  3. Add iPad Support
    • We recommend that you expand the Advanced Settings add iPad support for students. Many students use iPads for their primary device. 

Step 5: Save Settings

  1. Click Save and Close.
  2. Your quiz will now show “Required” under LockDown Browser and Respondus Monitor in the dashboard.

Important Tips

  • Communicate with Students: Let them know they need LockDown Browser installed and a webcam for Respondus Monitor.
  • Provide a Practice Quiz: This helps students test their setup before the final.
