CATS Recommendations for AI Detection

As with other tools intended to bolster academic integrity and reduce cheating, AI detection tools are to be used within a careful and consistent evaluation strategy.

AI detection tools are not always reliable and can produce false positives and negatives, potentially misidentifying original work as duplicated or missing actual plagiarized or generated work. They have difficulty detecting issues in creative writing and may detect issues in writing English as a second language.

For these reasons, it is recommended that AI detection tools are used as a supplement to your professional judgment and knowledge of students’ work and in conjunction with clear guidelines for use in your course. For more information about this, see Ensuring Academic Integrity > Update Course Policies.

As always, we recommend discussion any concerns with students before making decisions as to the legitimacy of their scholarly work.
