What follows are some obvious, and not so obvious, tips to help protect yourself and your data:
-
Don’t plug in random USB drives – they could carry malware that infects your device.
-
Lock your computer when you step away – someone could misuse your access in seconds.
-
Never leave your laptop or backpack unattended – thefts can happen fast, even in trusted spaces.
-
Avoid using public Wi-Fi without a VPN – your data can be intercepted.
-
Think before you click – phishing emails often look official. When in doubt, don’t click.
-
Enable multi-factor authentication (MFA) where ever possible– it adds a vital layer of protection to your accounts.
-
Keep software and apps updated – updates patch security holes.
-
Use strong, unique passwords for each account – and consider using a password manager.
-
Don’t share your login credentials – not with coworkers, friends, or anyone.
-
Report anything suspicious – trust your gut and notify IT/security right away.
-
Beware of QR codes posted in public – attackers can replace them with malicious links.
-
Don’t reuse your university password on other sites – if one site gets breached, attackers try the same password elsewhere.
-
Cover your webcam when not in use – malware can silently activate it.
-
Don’t auto-forward your university email to personal accounts – sensitive data may leave secure systems.
-
Clear browser autofill on shared or lab machines – it can store passwords or personal info.
-
Avoid saving passwords in your browser – use a dedicated password manager instead.
-
Be cautious with browser extensions – some collect data or inject malicious code.
-
Log out of accounts on shared or public devices – closing the tab isn’t enough.
-
Check app permissions – many mobile apps ask for far more access than they need.
-
Don’t assume "cloud" means safe – always verify who has access and what protections are in place.
